Back to School Tips

It is hard to believe that summer break is almost over, and school is right around the corner. School can bring about many issues including stress, tension, and body aches and pains. These issues do not make school an enjoyable time, no matter how old you are. When it comes to staying healthy during school, it is easy to forget how important chiropractic care can be. Whether you are attending school in-person or being homeschooled this year, the following tips from chiropractors will be helpful in staying healthy and free from pain.

Pay Attention to Backpacks

Back pain is a common ailment among many adults and children. However, many parents do not understand the importance of backpacks and how their child carries them. The way a child carries their backpack may not seem like a very big deal, but carrying a heavy backpack every day to school that does not fit properly can be detrimental to the spine.

The next time your child complains about their back hurting, keep in mind their backpack might be the reason. It is recommended limiting the weight within the backpack along with carrying it the right way. A backpack needs to fit close to the body with the straps being tight but still comfortable. The opposite is what usually occurs. A child wears their backpack hanging low on their legs which can cause major stress on the spine overtime.

Pay Attention to Your Sitting Posture

No matter where your child is for their studies, whether is it at home or at school, they will be sitting for long hours and five days a week. This can put a huge amount of stress on their back if their posture is off. These long periods of sitting gives tension the opportunity to build up over a period of time in the back, shoulders, and neck areas. A lot of adults work in offices that provide their employees ergonomic solutions that include adjustable chairs, standing desks, etc. Sadly, students do not have these options since schools usually have fixed desks that are not adjustable.

When your child sits at a desk, it is recommended to keep a straight posture with little slouching. It may seem like a simple task but sitting with straight posture regularly will stop possible distress on the spine. It is also important to know that it is even more vital to not be sitting all day. School does require a lot of sitting for many hours and makes it difficult to walk around but encourage your child to make it a priority to stand up and be on their feet as much as possible during the day.

Prioritize Consistent Sleep

Consistent sleep and chiropractic health go hand in hand. Consistent sleep is always important, especially during the school year. It can be difficult to prioritize sleep with busy schedules of after school activities and other extracurriculars. It is recommended to stick to a regular bedtime every night as well as sleeping more than eight hours each night. When your child is not getting enough sleep every night, the body and brain functions are at risk for suffering.

Returning to school for a new year can be exciting yet stressful, especially after a year of uncertainty due to COVID-19. Many things surrounding school will be different this year, but the health of your child should remain a top priority.
