Tips for Office Workers

If you work in an office you are probably spending hours each day sitting at your desk.  Hours of being sedentary can have some serious health consequences.  Try these tips to break up your work day and stay healthier this year.

Start your day off the right way, by eating breakfast.  A balanced breakfast can help you stay concentrated during the day.  A filling meal in the morning can also keep you from snacking during the day, helping to prevent weight gain.

Take little breaks throughout the day.  Taking many small breaks to stand up and move can actually be more beneficial than one long break.  You can also do little stretches at your desk.  You don’t have to stand up and stretch, you can stretch your neck, shoulders, and arms while seated.

Find ways to incorporate exercise into your work day.  If you live close enough to work you can walk or ride a bike instead of driving.  Starting your morning with some exercise will help you to feel more energized and can boost productivity.  If you take the bus get off an exit or two early and walk the rest of the way.  If you drive to work don’t take the parking spot closest to the door.  Park a little further and enjoy the chance to stretch your legs.  You can also use the stairs instead of the elevator, the activity can help loosen up your body and the consistent exercise can help you shed some unwanted weight.

Get fresh water and fresh air.  Staying hydrated will help your body stay healthy.  Walking from your desk to the kitchen or water fountain can be a good way to get out of your chair and stretch your limbs.  Try to get some fresh air during the day, if you can’t get outside easily consider having your lunch outside.

Take the time to plan a healthy lunch.  Bringing food from home can help you save money and can keep you from stopping by the vending machine or swinging through a fast food restaurant.  Keep portion control in mind, if you are sitting at your desk you aren’t burning many calories.  If you like to snack throughout the day bring some dried fruit or nuts to keep handy to satisfy your cravings in a healthy way.
