Five Tips for a Healthier Spine

Below are five tips to help give you a healthier spine brought to you by your Hazelwood and Florissant, Missouri Chiropractor, Dr. Adam Elsey.

Move around!

Taking a short break to stand, walk and stretch can help to wake up and loosen up your muscles.  This will help you to stay flexible, avoid poor posture, and keep your spine agile so pain doesn’t work its way in.

Pay attention to what you are wearing!

Choosing a smaller bag or purse instead of a big tote can help to reduce strain on your neck, shoulders and back.  Help keep your center of gravity level by wearing flat, supportive shoes.

Sit up straight, but don’t strain.

Sitting up straight can help align your spine and keep pressure off of your nerves, but be careful.  If your posture is too stiff and straight it is an unnatural position and can actually strain your back. Remember to take breaks if you are seated for an extended period of time to give your back a break.

Be back friendly when you carry things.

Carrying heavy things can put a lot of pressure on your back.  You could strain or misalign your spine, causing pain.  If you have the option, pushing something is gentler to your back than carrying it.  Remember to keep the item close to your body and to lift with your legs if you do have to carry something heavy.

Don’t ignore the pain!

If you find yourself in pain, don’t ignore it.  Ice the area to help with possible inflammation, gently stretch to help keep your spine loose help to strengthen back muscles.  Our office can help address pain, and begin a healing process.
