What To Look For in a Chiropractor

Choosing the right chiropractor isn’t an easy decision.  Where do you begin? When choosing a chiropractor, you should be taking into consideration the same kinds of factors you did when choosing your primary care provider and deserves the same kind of scrutiny.  After all, your chiropractor is part of the team of people working with you to achieve a healthier life and you’re entrusting them with proper and effective treatment for your recovery.

A Referral

Ask your friends and family members if they have a chiropractor they can recommend and ask why they’re recommending them.  They may also know of a chiropractor that you should avoid.

One In Your Insurance Network

Before you set up that first appointment check with your insurance company to make sure you’re covered and that the chiropractor meets any network requirements.  Conversely, your insurance provider may be able to supply you with a list of chiropractors that are in your network to help narrow your search.

A State License

Your chiropractor must be fully licensed in the state that you’re in. Check your state’s licensing board’s website for more information.

Credentials

Your chiropractor should have earned a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from an accredited chiropractic school.

Convenience

Not everyone has the luxury of being able to leave work in the middle of the day to go to a chiropractic appointment. Look for a chiropractor who has hours that will work for you.

Good Reviews

These days, you should always take reviews with a grain of salt.  Some businesses ask friends to post good reviews and sites like Amazon are rife with fake reviews. If you see a lot of negative reviews for a particular chiropractor, be cautious. Look for reviews on various 3rd-party sites, not just ones that appear on the chiropractor’s website. The Better Business Bureau’s site is a good place to see reviews and often they’ll include a response from the business on how they resolved the problem. The BBB also has a handy rating system with possible reasons for the rating and other company information.

A Good Vibe

When you meet your chiropractor for the first time, it’s important he or she makes you feel comfortable and at ease as well as confident that you will receive appropriate care. The office should be comfortable.  Your chiropractor should be focused on your whole health and quick recovery and giving you the strategies you need to take care of yourself in the future. If your chiropractor seems to be trying to keep you on the hook for long-term care that may be unnecessary, get a second opinion.

Experience

Sure, everyone’s got to start somewhere but if you can find a chiropractor with lots of experience treating patients, especially those with your condition, all the better.

A good chiropractor will be straightforward with treatment options and your plan for recovery.  You should feel confident in the hands of your chiropractor and assured that you’re receiving the best treatment possible.
